Another daughter of Harvey with smoothness of blending, a level topline, and angularity. She has short strong pasterns and depth of heel, straight front legs, a wide, flat rump and good brisquet extension. During our 2012 Linear Appraisal, she got very strong scores in dairyness, rump angle, foreudder attachment, and rear udder height. She has very soft udder texture, and even though her teats could be larger, her orifices are very open, and she milks down really well. I would like to see her tighter in the toes and her teats placed a bit closer to her MSL. I can't believe how much udder capacity she has for such a little thing too. She's one of the friendliest of our friendly does, and usually has a much more pleasant expression on her face, but was not happy that even though she was standing still, I was not giving her constant wither scratches.

Floe is yet another one of our does who was pretty at about a month of age, then gave me little ulcers with how she was developing as a yearling. I think the spouse got tired of hearing "UUUUHHHHGGG! Floe is SO AWKWARD!" because I said it so often. Luckily, he doesn't have to hear it anymore, because she freshened and has become lovely again. She's one of our more powerful does (fans of Nancy Drew would recognize her as a "traditionally built" girl), but leads the herd in the production index (she's at 126% of expected production for her age), and nothing seems to slow her down in the milk bucket. She is deep and wide, and has an udder that is wide and attached all over, with teats that are easily hand milked. Ideally, her rump could be a bit wider, and she could use a bit more dairy character, but I wouldn't change much else about this easy going, friendly girl.

This is one of those does I decided to keep as soon as she hit the ground. She is very long bodied, with all sorts of dairy strength going on- width, depth, udder capacity, femininity, a long, wide rump and width between the hocks. At her first not-freezing-cold show as a first freshener, she easily finished her permanent championship. She can be a little bit of a ditz when it comes to the milk stand (you do this twice a day, seven days a week-- how can you possibly be confused about where your head goes?!? FYI, into the stancheon, just like all of those other times), but she tries to make up for it by being a heck of a milker, and super sweet. I am so happy to have another Siren daughter in the herd! During our 2019 LA session, I was especially happy with her Excellent scores in the structural categories of head, back, and rump, and a 45 in rear udder arch and MSL.

Nikita is a very nicely put together doe, and a repeat of the breeding that produced big sister SGCH Castle Rock Angelika VVEE 91. This is one of our end of the year bottle babies, who ended up a little on the standoffish side- she never comes up to say hi, but is completely calm and easty to handle when you get her. She shows us dairy character, nice depth and width of body, plenty of width between the hocks, and smoothness of blending. She freshened with a very capacious well attached udder that is butter soft and easy to milk.

(Castle Rock Graupel x CH Castle Rock Raspberry Beret VEVE 91)

Bonnie was not a doe I was planning on keeping when she hit the ground as I had restricted myself to keeping "just" ten doe kids in 2015. However, when people came to pick out kids and would ask if she was available, I kept finding myself saying "I don't think so". And now that she's matured, I have to say I think that worked out well. She has one of the highest rear udders in the herd, with excellent texture, a strong medial, and very strong foreudder attachement. I really like how level and balanced this doe is and love her "look at me" attitude in the ring, which makes her a delight to show. She's a lovely addition to the herd with a quiet, sweet disposition that reminds me very much of her grandmother Tesla.

Haily is one of my smallest milkers, but has a lovely, well attached udder with capacity we are hoping the rest of her grows into. She's definitely an example of needing to be patient and knowing that this set of genes takes a while to come into its own. She has very good body capacity, and an extremely high rear udder with a surprising amount of capacity for a doe this small, and she comes into the milk room every time with a very, very full udder. Despite her small stature, she's done fairly well at the few shows she's gone to, winning her class several times.

Dam: Castle Rock Aphrodite
(Castle Rock Chicago Peace +*B x CH Castle Rock Helen of Troy VEVE 90)

I was a little surprised to cross two same-color of buckskin goats and get a pure black goat, but, being a sucker for black goats, I was delighted. Her sire, Jasper, had a bit of a rough time transitioning from temperate Oregon to the roasting heat of Vacaville, so I was just thrilled to finally have a daughter of his on the ground, and she is turning out to be very much what I was hoping for. She's long bodied, has a good rump angle, is femenine, elegant, and has a very nicely shaped and attached udder, with large, well defined, easy to milk teats. Persephone has developed a good deal of depth and width as a second freshener (pictured here as a first freshener), and is starting to really remind me of Black Ice. She's very people oriented, eager to get on the milk stand, and an overall joy to have on the farm.

Dam: GCH Castle Rock Flash Flood VEEE 90
(Castle Rock Tanzanite +*B x GCH Castle Rock Snownamie 2*M 4*D VEEE 90)

This bouncy little lady got her nickname- Bunny- before I could come up with her actual name. She's a spunky little thing, though the one time we took her to a show for the experience, she bounced and flipped a little too much like the animal she is named after. She's the only doe kid Flash produced for us before her passing in 2018, and that is also the year Bunny finally freshened for the first time. Oh, three year old first fresheners, you are such a test of patience and delayed gratification. Her second freshening udder is well attached, with the highest rear udder height score in the herd, a strong MSL, excellent texture, with a strong foreudder, and she milks down really well. She is a bit of a beast to lead, so the jury is out as to when she'll end up in the show ring as there are a few other herd members who are also working on their show ring manners and there's only so much sudden yanking down on the lead us farmers (and our arm sockets) can take at any given event.

Reading Performance Pedigrees

Annie's name is a good place to start when it comes to understanding all the code associated with the American Dairy Goat Association performance programs.
  • Her name is SG Proctor Hill Farm Pistol Annie 2*M 5-02 EX90 (EEEV).
  • SG stands for Superior Genetics, a designation that Annie earned based on her linear appraisal scores (quality of conformation compared to an ideal goat) and milk test results (how much milk and percent of butterfat).
  • Her dam is SGCH, which means she is a finished champion and superior genetics.
  • Proctor Hill Farm is the name of the farm that bred her.
  • 2*M means that she is the second generation on her maternal side to earn a milk star.
  • 5-02 is her age at the time of linear appraisal. She was five years and two months old.
  • EX90 means that she is excellent with a final score of 90. Only one Nigerian has received the highest score of 93.
  • EEEV is the abbreviation for her scores in the four major categories evaluated in linear appraisal. It means that she scored excellent in general appearance (category 1), dairy strength (category 2), and body capacity (category 3), and very good in mammary system (category 4).

ELITE is a designation awarded on the basis of a complex genetic calculation that focuses on milk production. Sires and dams that receive the Elite Buck or Elite Doe designation is considered to be in the top 5% of the nation genetically with regard to milk production.

Understanding Linear Appraisal Scores

  • EX or E = Excellent = 90 and above, 91 and above are relatively rare in the breed. 93 has been awarded to only one goat in the history of the breed.
  • VG or V = Very Good = 85 to 89
  • GP or + = Good Plus = 80 to 84
  • A = Acceptable = 70 to 79
  • F = Fair = 60 to 69
  • P = Poor = 59 and below
Goats are considered mature at five years of age and receive their final linear appraisal scores at that time. Younger goats typically receive lower scores because their bodies are immature compared to the ADGA "ideal" goat. In human terms, imagine comparing an awkward 13 year old with a perfect "10" supermodel like Gisele Bündchen.
