Breeding Season Reflections

It’s mid-year here at Owlhaven Farm. Another successful Linear Appraisal is on the books, the retained kids are developing nicely, and I’m looking ahead to breeding season.

EDITING A HERD
Breeding season is really a continuous process for me. Two years ago I spent some time reflecting on my herd’s progress with an ADGA appraiser who has visited my farm numerous times over the years. His feedback is always in the back of my mind when I make decisions. In 2018, he supported my decision to cut back my herd. My reasons had been to enable me to provide better care to my animals. His reasons were groundbreaking for me. First, he encouraged me to only breed my very best animals. Second, to develop consistency in a herd, it is best to narrow the number of dam lines represented.
